216 BC. The two great super powers of the ancient world, Rome and Carthage are engaged in a life and death struggle to control the known world. Hannibal, the legendary Carthaginian general leads his army across the Alps into Italy and inflicts three mighty disasters upon the poorly led Romans. After the battle of Cannae, Rome’s worst ever defeat in her history, it seems inevitable that the proud Roman republic will fall. In Rome only one man, Quintus Fabius Maximus seems to have the strength to guide the panic stricken city through the crisis. His heroic spirit rallies his countrymen and a divided Senate but his life is put in danger when a ruthless assassin arrives in Rome with orders to kill Fabius.

The Shield of Rome eBook William Kelso

William Kelso has written a very enjoyable novel based on the aftermath of a most devastating and humiliating defeat of a large Roman army at the hands of Hannibal, on the battlefields of Cannae, in 216 BC.

Most of the storyline is centred within the walls of Rome itself apart from the initial battle scene at Cannae. Although there are no other major battles throughout the novel the author still manages to create an atmosphere that grabs and holds the reader's interest from start to finish. I was so taken in by the novel that I read it in one day.

The Roman setting and key characters are based on historical facts and hence the whole story becomes more authentic and plausible. Quintus Fabius Maximus was the one Senator in Rome the populace turned to during this time of despair and for his efforts in upholding morale and a determination to not capitulate to the Carthaginians but, fight back, he was later honoured with the title of `The Shield of Rome' and thus, meaningfully the title of the novel.

The storyline is intricate and it involves Carthaginian spies, a Patrician family with split loyalties and fractious relationships, corrupt Senators, Subura thugs, Vestal Virgins and members of the Roman army. The author does a great job in meshing together all these people, each with their own motives and agendas, in a way that it makes riveting reading.

This is my first encounter with this author and I hope this novel will be the beginning of many more to come.

The Shield of Rome eBook William Kelso Reviews

I enjoyed the book. I will buy another book from this author. The author portrayed an accurate picture of ancient Rome. I felt the pacing was just fine and the characters well developed.
An excellent read that you can fall into and get lost in time. Some writers can transport you back into history just as if you are there. To be a believer you have to embrace the story just as if you were there as its taking place. In shadow, so to speak. This story did that for me.
I liked the plot. The book would have been a better read with better editing but it still kept my interest.
I enjoy William Kelso's writing. He did not disappoint. I have always had a passion for ancient history and Kelso's novels are a delightful aside from Tascitus and Suetonius. A good read.
Stories of Rome have held me since did my first detention in the school library. My desk was next to the R shelve and I read every book that the school possessed on Rome. Be it historical fiction or history I loved them all. Only book that has slowed me down is The Rise and Fall of Rome. That puppy needs to be buried with some one who has a Doctorial degree in history. Writers like Kelso and Simon Scarrow will take you to the front lines. You will smell the stink of sour wine, open sewers and politics that would shame even a Republican.
As a previous reviewer commented; this story commences with an absolutely rousing account of some of the principle characters' experiences in the battle of Cannae, when Hannibal defeated the Roman Army and left the Republic reeling and it's morale in tatters. The story then ceases to be military history and becomes a fairly routine spy/murder family history tale. Personally I would have liked the story to repeat some of the first chapter's battle scenes but this book seems to peak real early and slowly go downhill from there. Good political intrigues though, well researched and reasonable action with an interesting, if implausible, plot.
Thankfully there is a lot of better Roman history out there. This is only an OK read for me.
I loved it, great story. A little bit of war , adventure, family secrets , the things slaves do, subburra thugs, vestal virgins, religion, the complicated world of Senatorial politics , and much more .
